Specification for Swing Gates

Microprocessor control swing gate operators

Three variations of gate operator are available:

1. Gate rams are generally the most cost effective solution for gate automation although care has to be taken to ensure the correct geometric relationship between the gate hinge and the gate ram mounting points.
Units can be either electro-mechanical or hydraulic in operation with hydraulic units normally specified for commercial and industrial applications where heavy traffic or larger gates are found.

2. Articulated arm gate operators are very flexible and capable of a large number of operations per day. These units can generally be utilised on gates that do not suit rams due to unsuitable geometry between the gate hinge and the gate post.

3. Underground gate drive unit operators are suitable for applications where the aesthetics of the gate are to be maintained. The units are installed under the lower hinge point of the gate and are attached to the structural member at the bottom of the gate.

• All units are available in 240V or 24V. With ever increasing emphasis on safety, the lower voltage units are becoming more commonplace particularly as the price is usually the same.  It is usually recommended to specify low voltage units if possible.

• Entry and exit activation for the gates can be by remote hand transmitters, by photo electric sensors, or any other specified access control system.

• Gate exit can be by any of the above methods. In some situations free exit can be obtained by positioning a photo electric beam or an induction loop across the exit roadway.

• Safety is paramount and the method is often dependant upon the site layout. Options include photo electric sensors and/or induction loop on a non ferrous gate, all combined with sensitive low voltage gate operators.

• Gate automation can be installed to either inward or outward opening gates and some operators allow swing gates to open greater than 90O as well as allowing two gates in a pair to open at differing speeds and through differing angles.

• Installation can in most cases be carried out on existing as well as new gates if the structure of the gate is in good condition

• All gate systems allow for individual tailoring of gate control parameters such as the amount of time a fully automatic gate system is held open before attempting to close.

• Most units operate within a temperature range of -20 deg C to 45 deg C. If extreme cold is a possibility then extra systems can be incorporated into some units to increase the temperature operating range.
